Certifications and Your IT Degree: What You Need to Know
“Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+ are respected in the IT field, and they are even more valuable when combined with the broader academic foundation of a degree,” says Steven M. Balke, Sr., Dean of Business, Technology, and Health Management Programs. “They may not be all that matters for advancement, but they can be a strong part of your toolkit.”
How Certifications Fit into Your Courses
NAU’s IT courses include preparation for certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, and Cloud+, along with TestOut exams like Linux Pro and Security Pro. You will receive access to study resources like TestOut or CompTIA CertMaster Learn, which include labs, videos, and practice activities.
Some assignments, such as labs and lesson reviews, are graded. Prep materials like content pages and videos are not graded but strongly encouraged, as they are designed to help you perform better on graded work and certification exams. As Dean Balke notes, “Practice makes progress.”
What Students Ask Most
- Do I automatically earn the certification if I pass the course?
No. You are prepared for the exam in class, but certification is only awarded by the external organization when you pass their test. - Are exams included in tuition?
Some prep resources are included, but exam fees are usually separate. If a voucher is offered, it typically covers the first attempt only. - What if I need to retake an exam?
Retakes must be purchased directly from the certification provider. - Will certifications guarantee me a job?
Certifications can strengthen your résumé, but neither NAU nor the certification provider can guarantee employment or salary. Outcomes depend on many factors, including skills, experience, and the job market.
